Sex addiction

Sex addiction can be defined as any compulsive behaviour (related to sex) which acts as a destructive force on an individual’s life.  This could manifest itself in several ways, causing emotional distress or upset to the individual and their family members or loved ones. Sex addiction is essentially compulsive or obsessive behaviour which completely dictates the addict’s life.  We can help you.

Could you have a problem? These questions might help you to decide.

  • Have you tried to control or cut down the amount of sex that you have?
  • Have you ever had sex with someone that you didn’t want to have sex with?
  • Do you need a sexual relationship to make your life bearable?
  • Do you become anxious or even desperate when you are away from your partner?
  • Do you engage in sexual practices that bring you discomfort or pain?
  • Do you feel that life would be meaningless without a sexual relationship?
  • Do you spend a lot of time thinking about sex?
  • Do you feel uncomfortable about masturbation?
  • Have any of your important relationships been ruined through affairs?
  • Would your quality of life be improved if you were not so driven by sex and romance?

Signs and symptoms of sex addiction

Sex addiction can manifest itself in many ways, often a combination of things will take control and the addict’s life becomes totally unmanageable. Behaviours can include compulsive masturbation, online pornography, exhibitionism, unsafe sex, phone or computer sex, prostitution, compulsive heterosexual and homosexual relationships, voyeurism.

Sex addicts often experience self-loathing. They can suffer the same consequences more usually associated with alcoholism or drug addiction – lost relationships, difficulties with work, a loss of interest in things not sexual, low self-esteem and despair.

Treatment options for sex addiction

Residential rehab centre treatment for sex addiction

If a patient decides that residential treatment is the best option for them, they can be assured of a high level of care.   Patients are given a psychiatric consultation and clinical assessment to ensure that the most effective treatment programme is constructed, thus guaranteeing the best possible chance for recovery. Patients will undergo an intensive course of therapy, helping them to explore their struggle with sex addiction in a safe, contained and supported way. Residential treatment also provides clients with a period of abstinence from their behaviours, upon which they can build. We offer free advice to patients and their loved ones on the best options available, considering level of care, cost and area.

Residential secondary treatment for sex addiction

Secondary treatment or ‘half-way house’ is a ‘step-down’ from primary care.  Patients will usually have completed a period of primary care within a residential facility but will not yet be ready to return to the community.  Secondary care provides clients with a supported structure within which they can begin to learn new life skills. We can help you to identify if this is going to be something that is appropriate for you or your loved one.

Outpatient treatment sex addiction

Outpatient treatment options vary a great deal, from daily day-care to intensive evening programmes. We can help you to decide on the best option for you. Sex addiction programmes are usually specifically designed, and focus upon helping patients to achieve abstinence from ‘acting out’ behaviours and a solid base for a life in recovery. We help patients decide on the best programme for them.
