Prescription drug addiction

We work with a number of different patients who are addicted to prescription drugs. Patients frequently find that they have developed a dependency to prescription drugs following the prescription of medication from their GP. Patients find that the NHS is not necessarily able to offer them the level of help that they require and they often turn to us for other options for treatment and support.

Do I have a problem with prescription drugs?

  • Have you tried to cut down or stop your drug use with little to no success?
  • Do you feel guilty about your drug use?
  • Do you use prescription drugs in secret from family and loved ones?
  • Have you had legal or financial difficulties as a result of your drug use?
  • Has your drug use been the cause of arguments between you and your loved one?
  • Have you missed work due to your drug use?
  • Do you have to take other drugs in order to cope with the side effects of the prescription drugs?
  • Have you suffered withdrawal symptoms as a result of ceasing your drug use?
  • Do you continue to use in spite of increasingly serious negative consequences?

What is a prescription drug addiction?

Prescription drugs are legal drugs provided that people have been prescribed them by them their GP - this does not however mean that they are not highly addictive. Patients develop both emotional and physical dependencies on prescription drugs and frequently require a medically assisted detox if they wish to stop using.

These drugs are frequently prescribed to produce sedation, induce sleep, treat anxiety and muscle spasms and to prevent or cease seizures. In high doses these types of drugs will act as a hypnotic and in low doses symptoms are similar to that of a sedative.

Treatment options for prescription drug addiction

Residential rehab centre treatment for prescription drug addiction

If a patient decides that residential treatment is the best option for them then they can be assured of a high level of care. Upon admission patients begin a carefully designed detox program which allows them to withdraw from their drug as comfortably as possible. Patients are frequently under 24-hour medical care and clinically needs are addressed thoroughly and safely. Patients are given a clinical assessment during their first few days of treatment - this ensures that the best possible treatment program is constructed thus ensuring the best chance for recovery. Patients then engage in a therapeutic program which consists of both group and individual therapy. We can help you to decide on the right program for you today.

Residential secondary treatment for prescription drug addiction

Secondary treatment or ‘half-way house’ is a ‘step-down’ from primary care. Patients will usually have completed a period of primary care within a residential facility but will not yet be ready to return to the community. Secondary care provides clients with a supported structure within which they can begin to learn new life skills. We can help you to identify if this is going to be something that is appropriate for you or your loved one.

Outpatient treatment for prescription drug addiction

Outpatient treatment options vary a great deal, from daily day care options to intensive evening programs - we can help you to decide on the best option for you. Frequently patients will do a combination of a residential and outpatient program, completing a short intensive program as a residential client and continuing with the therapeutic program on an outpatient basis.

One to one counselling for prescription drug addiction

We work with a number of different counsellors who specialise in prescription drug addiction. Patients will frequently require a counsellor on completion of any of the above structured treatment programs and we can put you in touch with people who can help today. We can also give you access to free support groups throughout the UK.
