Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are manifested by obsessive thoughts and inappropriate behaviours around food. The most common forms of eating disorders are
- Anorexia Nervosa – when people starve themselves through obsessive control of their food but cannot accept that they are too thin or are putting themselves in danger
- Bulimia Nervosa – when people binge eat and then vomit or take laxatives to ‘purge’ themselves
- Compulsive eating - when people cannot control the amount they eat at any one time
These conditions are generally associated with people who have low self esteem and feelings of self-loathing. They can often manifest themselves in high achieving individuals who have an obsessive desire to seek and achieve perfection. Eating disorders are difficult to treat because food is such an integral part of our lives. Unlike alcohol or drugs, abstinence from food is not an option. Help is available however. Call us for information on clinics that specialise in eating disorders both here and abroad.
