Detox
What is a detox?
Detox is short for detoxification and for some, it is the first step needed to begin recovery from an addiction. When an individual is physically dependent on alcohol or any other drug, a medical detox will usually be required. Without it, a person can suffer from withdrawal symptoms and intense cravings.
Withdrawal symptoms can range from mild headaches or tremors to severe vomiting and convulsions depending on the type, severity and length of the addiction.
Without appropriate expert medical intervention, an alcoholic or addict may struggle to participate in the treatment provided by a rehab centre or counsellor. A medical detox is usually administered and monitored by a doctor or nurse and can either take place in one’s home or in a residential rehabilitation centre, detox clinic, or hospital.
